As I started this BEST SELF challenge I felt it was important to highlight a few of the people that push me to BECOME MY BEST SELF. Sometimes it is not the people that you have lunch or talk to daily. It may in fact be people that you are rarely seen in pictures with that bring the greatest impact to our lives.
In many ways he is like a father to me. There are not many weeks that go by that I don’t talk to him. Sometimes our conversations are short and sweet but oftentimes we spend our conversations talking about the goodness of God and our daily lives. Many years ago he started calling me baby girl or cousin. Over the years I have gained so much respect, love and wisdom from him. I have also gleaned from his will power of living, overcoming, letting go, and loving. I often tell people I am his favorite cousin ( I actually tell all of my cousins I am their favorite).
My cousin Tim. He is blind. For as long as I have known him he has always been that way. One of the things that I love about him is that he never allowed his blindness to keep him from living. In life he has achieved a Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s Degree, lived alone, he works out regularly, and goes more than the average person. He works full-time and has for as many years as I can remember. It is our goal to run a race together soon!
In addition he is a man of faith that loves God, a prayer warrior and one that I know has impacted many lives. He is an encourager and always choosing to live life to the fullest. From trains, planes, to automobiles if one is moving he is in it.
At times when I have felt like quitting or given up I am reminded of my cousin that doesn’t allow excuses or his blindness to keep him pushing forward and living. I am reminded of a man with a big loving heart that doesn’t even realize the impact that he makes on others simply because he chooses to live life to the fullest. I am reminded of a man that is the best passenger on long trips, with the latest and greatest IPHONE, and that absolutely loves watching sports! I am reminded of my cousin TIM.
At times when I want to throw in the towel or tell myself I can’t I am reminded of my cousin that pursued not only one degree but two. I am reminded of the man that wakes up at 3:30AM, gets dress, cooks meals, and catches a train into Washington, DC every day. He is an earthly reminder that my life is what I chose to make it, my only limitations are the ones I set for myself, with God all things are possible, and that if I can believe it, I can achieve it, and I can then GET.IT.DONE.
My cousin Tim Hairston, inspires me to BE MY BEST SELF without excuses. Who is your inspiration?
